The WHO has announced Ebola has now topped 10,000 cases, doubling within its forecast time. At least 5,000 have been fatal. It has now spread to Mali, where a two-year-old girl who arrived from Guinea has died, prompting neighbouring Mauritania to close its border.

While Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea struggle to gear up
to tackle the virus, in America, several governors have imposed quarantines. The president has called for calm.

“New travel measures are now directing all travellers from the three affected countries in West Africa into five US airports where we’re conducting additional screening. Starting this week, these travellers will be required to report their temperatures and any symptoms on a daily basis for 21 days until we’re confident they don’t have Ebola,” said Barack Obama in a televised broadcast.

With Ebola seemingly able to slip containment in West Africa, China is the latest country to stiffen controls on travellers entering from there, including temperature detectors at Beijing airport.

And in southern China the Guangdong province Emergency Command Center is on high alert.
