Staffers at Georgia Aquarium have announced that a beluga whale named Maris is pregnant. Maris’ first calf was born in 2012, but the baby experienced a number of medical problems and passed away less then 7 days after the birth.

Her next calf is expected to arrive in the Spring of next year. Zoo officials are optimistic about the upcoming birth.

Georgia Aquarium’s chief veterinary officer and senior vice president, Dr. Greg Bossart remarked “Maris is in good health, and her calf appears to be developing normally. We are hopeful for a successful birth, especially since Maris demonstrated strong maternal behavior during her first pregnancy.”

He also pointed out that the likelihood for a successful birth increases after every beluga pregnancy. First-time pregnancies for belugas often result in the loss of the calf, not only in captivity but in the wild as well.

From now until the delivery, Maris will be receiving frequent ultrasounds to monitor her health and that of the beluga whale calf as well as routine veterinary exams.

Staffers are already making preparations to ensure Maris will be comfortable during the birth. The mama beluga whale is currently in the second trimester of pregnancy.
