Canadian police said on Wednesday (October 22) they could not "at this point" confirm whether the man who shot dead a soldier at the National War Memorial in central Ottawa was the same person who shortly afterwards attacked the nearby parliament buildings.
"At 9:52 am this morning, the Ottawa police received multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting at the National War Memorial. The victim of the shootings is a member of the Canadian armed forces. His injuries were fatal...What followed was another incident on Parliament Hill. What I can tell you is that a male suspect is now deceased," Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordelaux said.
Authorities also said they had no prior indication that an attack was being planned.
"From our reaction, it caught us by surprise," Commanding Officer Giles Michaud, Royal Canadian Mounted Police National Division said.
