The stepfather of a three-year-old girl found dead in a Brooklyn apartment has been arrested and charged with second degree murder. He reportedly beat the toddler to death after she had an accident in her pants.

He reportedly beat the toddler to death after she had an accident in her pants.

When police arrived at the scene, Jeida Torres was unconscious with bruises on her body.

Her five-year-old brother answered the door, and also showed signs of physical abuse, telling the police that his stepfather tried to make his sister eat her dirty diaper.

The children were taken to the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, but Jeida went into cardiac arrest and died after arriving at the hospital.

Another resident of the Bushwick shelter is quoted as saying: “I used to hear kids crying…I would hear a lady and man arguing and a baby crying. But it never crossed my mind something like that would happen where we live.”

Authorities found the stepfather, twenty-year-old Kelsey Smith, in his aunt’s apartment where he had cut his wrists in an attempt to take his own life.

Smith had been arrested multiple times previously on various charges, including assault.

Jeida’s death is still under investigation by the New York City Department of Homeless Services and the Administration for Children’s Services.
