In Nepal rescue operations have been halted overnight for trekkers still missing after an unseasonal blizzard and avalanche struck a popular Himalayan trail.

Officials announced at least 29 people had died, and the death toll is expected to climb. Nepalese, Israeli, Canadian, Indian, Slovak and Polish trekkers were among those killed.

Rescue operations will resume at first light for the 10 trekkers still missing on the other side of the pass. A Facebook page has been set up to share information on trekkers who have been found safe.

Rescue efforts centred on the highest point in the trail which loops around Annapurna, the 10th highest peak in the world.

At least 154 people were rescued according to officials, among them were 76 foreigners.

The freak heavy snowfall during peak season caught trekkers and their guides off-guard. It is thought to be linked to Cyclone Hudhud which passed through India earlier in the week.
