These are the Cuban children hoping to improve their position – by becoming circus stars.

Here, in an abandoned movie theatre in Havana, aspiring acrobats climb a rope while young jugglers toss pins back and forth and others take turns on the trampoline or parallel bars.

The circus offers young Cubans the chance to aspire to a more lucrative future – it’s a rare opportunity to earn real money on the Communist-led island.

Cuban circus artists working abroad make a minimum of 800 euros (about $1,015 dollars) a month, and usually much more than that, a relative fortune compared to the meagre salaries back home.
