Transport for London and design firm PriestmanGoode have teamed up to create a brand new fleet of trains that are driverless.

The London Underground is an iconic staple of the city. However, in 2022, some of its current trains will become a thing of the past.

Transport for London and design firm PriestmanGoode have teamed up to create a brand new fleet of driverless trains. The designs for the 250 upcoming trains has been unveiled.

They all feature a streamlined, futuristic exterior without the traditional multi-carriage element, opting instead for a walk-through design. The Central, Piccadilly, Waterloo & City and Bakerloo lines will be some of the first to utilize the new trains.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers has expressed concerns that the trains won’t require a human operator. As a response, London Underground officials said that they will have a human driver in the early stages.

Furthermore, a spokesperson for Transport for London announced that no driver would lose their job. The future trains will also offer a substantial increase in capacity depending on the line, ranging from 25 to 60 percent.

The interior of the trains will be air conditioned and onboard wi-fi will allow passengers to browse the internet during their ride.

The new trains are planned to run 24 hours a day and remain in service for 30 to 40 years.
