The FBI is seeking the public's help in identifying a man the agency says appeared in an Islamic State propaganda add in September.
The man, the federal law enforcement agency says, was heard speaking both in Arabic and English with a North American accent.
The agency hoped that releasing a clip from the video online would help lead to possible tips.
It is believed that there are fewer than 10 Western hostages held by the Islamic State at this time.
Four Westerners have been beheaded by the Islamic State, which has come under air attack in Iraq and Syria by U.S., British, French and Arab fighter jets.
