A powerful typhoon made landfall in central Japan on Monday morning after washing three American airmen in Okinawa out to sea the previous day, killing at least one. Typhoon Phanfone came ashore near the city of Hamamatsu shortly after 8 am local time (23:00 GMT Sunday).

Authorities issued evacuation advisories for more than 400,000 people in the storm’s path. The high winds and heavy rains also hit the Japanese capital, Tokyo, causing disruption for commuters. There was also disruption at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport where 600 flights were cancelled.
