The boy's mother was also arrested for endangering the welfare of a child. She is being held in the Montgomery County jail pending formal charges.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY - The Montgomery County Juvenile Office has filed formal charges against the 14-year-old boy accused of shooting an 11-year-old girl Sunday. Chief Juvenile Officer Bruce McKinnon said his office charged the teen Monday with second degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. The accused shooter was still being held in the juvenile detention center Wednesday.

McKinnon said the 14-year-old appeared in circuit court Wednesday with his mother for a detention hearing to determine whether he'd remain in custody. The judge ruled the teen would remain in custody. If convicted, the 14-year-old could face up to four years in a youth services facility. Only if the charges are upgraded, could the teen potentially be tried as an adult. McKinnon said, in this case, that is unlikely.

The teen's mother, Norma Davis, was charged Monday with endangering the welfare of a child. She has since bonded out of jail. Court documents released Wednesday say Davis had four firearms and ammunition in her home and did nothing to secure them. The investigating deputy said Davis had been informed by her son's school that he was having suicidal thoughts. The documents say the teen shot the 11-year-old girl with a 12-gauge shotgun, hitting her in the throat. McKinnon added that it's too early to tell whether the shooting was accidental.

Sunday, the Montgomery County Sheriff said the 14-year-old shot an 11-year-old girl in the small town of New Florence, which is south of Montgomery City. Witnesses said the victim was "in bad shape," and "didn't know if she was going to walk."

The hospital that the victim was transported to, in St. Louis, cannot release information about the condition of juvenile patients.
