During the months of January and February, the Zanskar River in Ladakh freezes down forming a thicket of ice. Also, due to the heavy snowfall in the region, all the roads leading to the main valley gets disconnected and the frozen river bed serves as the only way of communication.
Trekkers from all over the world flocks the Zanskar Valley during the winters and get geared up for the exhilarating 9 days of Chadar Trek. Flowing deep into the mountains, the river has its own challenges, obstacles and thrill. While at times, the trekkers need to slide over the river surface, at times they have to continue trekking through ankle deep water, climb up the nearby cliffs and surpass the snowy peaks as well.
Though the trek sounds extremely strenuous, upon its completion, the trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of deep ravines, promising peaks, frozen waterfalls, several caves and local villages. During this Frozen River Zanskar Trek, they can also visit several monasteries and gompas and get acquainted with the lively culture and traditions of Ladakh.
On a whole, the Chadar Trek is not only about trekking in Ladakh, but also the indigenous way to have a glimpse of the local life. It is a way to witness how the local people carry out their daily activities, even when the rest of the world is disconnected from them!
