Michael Phelps is a highly recognized swimmer who has earned 22 Olympic metals. Recently he was arrested in Baltimore for allegedly driving under the influence.
Swimmer Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time with 22 medals including 18 gold. However, out of the pool, his personal life appears to have some problems.
Recently he was arrested in Baltimore for allegedly driving under the influence. Maryland Transit Authority police detained him after he was stopped in the early morning hours inside the Fort McHenry Tunnel.
Reportedly Phelps was pulled over for doing 84 miles per hour in a zone with a limit of 45.
A statement released by The Maryland Transportation Authority further elaborates “Mr. Phelps.. appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests. Mr. Phelps was cooperative throughout the process.”
He has since been released from police custody. This is the Olympian’s second driving under the influence charge that he’s faced in the state of Maryland.
The first was in 2004 and in 2009 he faced controversy after he was photographed holding a marijuana pipe.
It’s unknown if disciplinary action will be taken against him pertaining to the recent incident, as he has no other swim meets scheduled for this year.
