Hundreds of high school aged students joined university students Friday calling for Hong Kong's leader, Leung Chun-ying, to resign.

University and college students began a class boycott on Monday with a rally that drew about 13,000.

The demonstrators are demanding full democracy in a series of escalating acts that will culminate in an "Occupy Central" blockade on October 1.

Under a formula known as "one country, two systems", Hong Kong returned from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

China promised to respect Hong Kong's semi-autonomous status, including an independent judiciary and western freedoms, for 50 years after the handover from British rule.

But Beijing last month rejected demands for people to freely choose the city's next leader, prompting threats from pro-democracy activists to shut down the central financial district.
