Should you ever find yourself wanting a cup of tea while standing near an erupting volcano, know that water can be brought to a boil by pouring it over lava.

A video of people using the technique was recently posted on the Facebook page of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences.

The steps involved are pretty straightforward, and the equipment list is short.

What’s needed is a pot, some water, a shovel, and, of course, a willingness to walk up to live volcano.

It appears that having an assistant tag along is optional, but definitely helpful as it allows one person to concentrate fully on dropping the blazing hot earth into said pot.

The other can then carefully pour the water over it.

Of course, the purpose of the demonstration was likely for science, as it’s the institute’s mission to explore and better understand volcanoes.

They’ve been keeping close watch of the activity at Bardarbunga, an Icelandic mountain that’s been erupting since mid-August.

It’s not believed that the lava will stop flowing any time soon.
