[12-Jun-2013] Today in Strasbourg, MEPs approved an agreement on the new Schengen reform recently finalized by the three EU institutions (the Commission, Parliament and Council). The set of new rules aims to improve the management of the EU's passport-free internal zone, the so-called 'Schengen area'.

Under the new deal, the EU's border agency, Frontex, will periodically conduct an objective risk analysis to evaluate how the rules are being applied. Where persistent failures are putting the security of the Schengen area in serious danger, the Commission will be able to propose that border controls are reinstated for a limited period of time. This would be as a last resort and any recommendation from the Commission would need the approval of the Council.
