Xerfi Global has recently published a study on "world media companies". The industry’s landscape has dramatically changed over the past decade through the digitisation of media. Online distribution facilities and new media devices and formats such as smartphones, tablets, mobile applications, e-books, etc. have meant that consumers have become used to an overflow of immediate and cheap media content and have led to new distribution strategies and consumption patterns. The revenue structure has also witnessed changes. Total media revenues include income from subscriptions, license fees, and retail sales of various media formats but it is advertising that generates a huge amount of income. The share of advertising income in global media revenues dropped during the global economic crisis, but has since stabilised at around 49%. [...]
