Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have a lot of faith. Faith in the idea that a fashion show which hones in - with a laser focus - on one idea will be enough to build an entire collection. This time that belief paid off.
This collection was clearly a continuation of what the designers have shown the last couple of seasons (again with the street casting, the Sicilian starting point, those pleat front pants). But instead of being another chapter in the story, the designers finally got to the culmination of their long gestating sartorial narrative. At last those religious elements that were only hinted at in the past became the core component of the collection.
The designers said that the show was "dedicated to devotion" and it was on many levels. Not just the easily made connections like white shirts embellished with what looked like baptismal lace, the ¾ sleeve T-shirts covered in black and white iconography images or the velvet scarves edged in gold fringe which were a clear nod to a priest's garb. But it was also about the designers' lifelong dedication to tailoring and perfectly crafted menswear. This was honored on the runway in all of the precisely cut three-piece suits, how a needlepoint flower motif seamlessly blended onto velvet evening jackets and the way the double breasted overcoat were giving a controlled volume that never overwhelmed the wearers.
Thankfully the show never got too highfaluting, although the abundance of lush floral pattern pieces made it a close call. And it helped that most of the "alter boy" models looked like they would need to go to confession more than a couple of times a week.
Now that the designers have bared their religious soul with this show it is time for them to turn their talents onto something other than the multifaceted Sicily (whose fertile fashion ground needs to have a fallow season or two). The brand's faithful fans will surely follow them wherever they may go next.
