Typically tomatoes, even the excessively large ones, can fit in the palm of your hand. Dan MacCoy is a man from Ely, Minnesota who didn’t set out to grow a normal size tomato.

Instead he created a possible record-breaking one that is absolutely massive. MacCoy's monster tomato weighs over 8 pounds.

After cutting it off the vine, he brought it to Ely’s Northland Market where it tipped the scales at 8.41 pounds. Onlookers in the store were reportedly jumping and cheering.

MacCoy believes Guinness World Records will declare it the heaviest tomato ever grown. An official with the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth attended the public weigh-in to witness it.

As long as nobody grows a heavier tomato by the first of November, MacCoy should be able to claim the title. The current official record was set in 1986. That tomato weighed in at 7.75 pounds.

MacCoy used seeds from a 4.57 pound tomato he grew last year. The original tomato was grown from “Big Zac” seeds, which were purchased from a grower in France.

This year MacCoy started the process on April 15 by growing the seeds indoors, and then moved the plants to a greenhouse in May.

MacCoy says his huge tomato looks like five smaller fruits that fused together into one.
