While running a marathon, nothing hits the spot like a good beverage. Typically, runners get water or some Gatorade, but those who take part in France’s Marathon du Medoc get something a little stronger.

Any runner knows how critical fluids and nutrition are while running a marathon. Typically, most aid stations offer water or sports drinks, but those who take part in France’s Marathon du Medoc get something a little stronger.

The annual event is a cross between a wine festival and marathon, and is not surprisingly nicknamed ‘the longest marathon in the world’. Finishing rather than winning seems to be the focus.

Runners get to pound their feet on the 26.2 mile route and taste wine along the way.

Fittingly, they trek across beautiful vineyards in the Medoc region. Adding to the fun aspect, competitors get to dress up.

Last year, the event theme was ‘Sci-Fi’. Some runners dressed up to appear as aliens while others did their best to look like ‘Avatar’ characters.

This year, the 30th marathon will be held on September 13th. The theme is ‘Carnival around the world’, so competitors are expected to dress to fit the bill.

Although the marathon seems to be undoubtedly fun, make no mistake about it, the event is physically grueling. The 26 mile journey has a time limit of 6 and a half hours; just enough to savor the oysters, steak and generous pours of wine along the way.
