ANTI-ISIS FLAG-BURNING CAMPAIGN IN LEBANON
Web users in Lebanon have launched an anti-ISIS flag-burning campaign in response to claims by the Islamic State terror group that they have executed two Lebanese soldiers over the past few days.
A trio of Lebanese teens ignited the social media campaign with this photo taken in Beirut last week, urging the world to burn ISIS flags and then upload the images.
Lebanon`s Minister for Justice Ashraf Rifi took to his Facebook page soon afterwards, saying legal action should be taken against them as their act could provoke interfaith violence in the country. He also feels it`s an insult to Islam, because the ISIS flag features the Shahada, which is the declaration of Muslim faith.
But this has done little to stop other Lebanese web users following suit. The campaign is modelled on the “Ice Bucket Challenge” which consists of pouring a bucket of ice cold water over your head, and nominating online contacts to do the same. Here people are urged to film or take a photo of a burning ISIS flag and share the images online under the #Burn ISIS Flag Challenge hashtag. And the craze has spread further afield than Lebanon, as we can see from these shots, sent in from the United States.
