STORY: New Jersey governor and potential U.S. presidential candidate Chris Christie met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico City on Thursday (September 04) on day two of his trade mission to boost investment and commercial ties between the Latin American nation and his state.

According to official statistics, New Jersey exported over $2 billion in goods to Mexico and imported over $3.4 billion from the country.

Christie is looking to build on that figure by capitalising on Pena Nieto's recent reforms to open up Mexico's energy sector to private investment.

The New Jersey Governor's trip to Mexico is his second foreign visit as governor after visiting Israel in 2012, and could help build his foreign policy credentials ahead of possible nomination for the Republican Party's presidential candidate.

Mexico is Latin America's second biggest economy.
