A group of around 500 protesters gathered on the opening day of the NATO summit at Newport in Wales.
The demonstrators were made up of a coalition of different groups making various demands and they were clearly worried about events in Ukraine.
“What we are seeing now is a potential for the first time in a generation of a clash, either indirect or direct, between major powers in Europe and I think thats frightening many people”, said one protester, “so we are here really to put pressure on our world leaders, the NATO leaders, to say we need to de-escalate rather than escalate global tension”.
The summit is one of NATO’s busiest for some years. The crisis in Ukraine may be dominating the agenda but the rise of the Islamic State and what to do about it will also be high on the list of priorities for delegates.
