The River Thames is an iconic part of London. Now, a 70-foot-long hippo is temporarily calling the waterway home.

The hippopotamus is an inflatable replica of the mammal. It’s called ‘HippopoThames’ and is the brainchild of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman.

The giant artwork floats down the river next to boats, making most of the vessels look tiny in comparison. Hofman is known for making huge and colorful sculptures for water.

He’s responsible for creating the oversized rubber duck that hit the waters of many cities around the world. The artist was contacted by the organizers of the yearly festival called Totally Thames earlier this year.

They asked Hofman to design something unique for the event and he didn’t disappoint. Hofman remarked “I wanted to use the hippo to get people out of their homes, away from the Internet and the TV, and to explore London with a new perspective."

‘HippopoThames’ was inspired by a children’s book that belongs to Hofman’s daughter. He also knew the stretched design of the replicated mammal would allow it to easily pass under bridges.

The hippo will be floating in the river as a display until September 28th.
