The Mumbai police have registered a case of rioting and trespassing against BJP parliamentarian Gopal Shetty and 30 others after they allegedly threatened a Kandivali-based private developer Wednesday evening. No arrests have been made in the case, said police.
The complainant has alleged that Shetty was present at the spot and that he threatened him. According to M Pandarmise, senior police inspector of Kandivali police station, Lakhmendra Khurana approached the police after 30 people barged into his office and threatened him. The builder claimed that the mob, including Gopal Shetty, beat him, his son, his partner and his watchman.
The officers said the private developer had bought the property in Kandivali(West) from another builder for redevelopment. It had 27 tenants at the time of purchase. Khurana had then shifted the families to a temporary building and paid the rent of one year. However during this time the building was listed as dilapidated.
The tenants claimed that the builder later refused to give them possession again of their flats. Khurana in his complaint claimed that the tenants approached the MP and asked him to pressurise Khurana into returning the flats.
The Kandivali police said they registered the case under sections of rioting, trespassing and criminal intimidation based on the complaint of Khurana. "Shetty has not disputed the builder's claim about his presence at the spot. After that is proved, we will record Shetty's statement,"said Pandarmise.
On Thursday, the tenants of the Gayatri Apartments approached the Kandivali police in favour of Shetty, asking the police to register a case of cheating against Khurana. When contacted, Gopal Shetty's spokesperson said Shetty supported the tenants.
