A heavy police and media presence have gathered outside the family home of Steven Sotloff, Tuesday, following the release of a video allegedly showing the beheading of the American journalist by Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria. The execution video of the journalist captured by IS arrived just days after his mother released a video pleading for her son’s life.

Steven Sotloff, who grew up in Miami, went missing in August 2013 in Syria. His family reportedly kept his disappearance a secret fearing that he might be killed if they went public. But Sotloff's capture became public after recent video of the beheading of another American journalist James Foley showed footage of Sotloff as the next hostage to face execution.

A family spokesman said in a statement emailed to news organizations that members of the family will not be speaking publicly and would continue to grieve privately. Sotloff is survived by his mother, father and a younger sister.
