At least 15 people were killed in a landslide in southwestern China as rescuers searched through debris on Thursday (August 28) for those still missing, state media reported.

A landslide engulfed nearly an entire village in Fuquan City of southwestern Guizhou province on Wednesday (August 27) evening due to heavy rain, official Xinhua news agency said.

Eight people remained missing and 22 were injured as of Friday (August 29), Xinhua said.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV broadcast footage of rescue teams searching for survivors amid heavy debris at the disaster site.

Xinhua said that most of the village residents were either elderly or children, as most of the work-age population had moved to urban areas.

A total of 77 houses were completely destroyed by the landslide, CCTV said.

Torrential rainfalls have exacerbated rescue efforts, CCTV added.
