Now French President Francois Hollande is calling for a eurozone summit as soon as possible to coordinate a push for growth and define a new rhythm for deficit reduction.

“Europe must change,” he told a meeting of top French diplomats in Paris.

“It must reconsider a number of policies, clarify its organisation, recapture public support and more than anything win the battle for growth and employment.”

Hollande spoke as his new 36-year-old Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron ran into trouble with trade unions for suggesting exemptions to France’s 35-hour working week.

The comments were made before his appointment in a reshuffle and the government has insisted that no changes are planned.

Its economy struggling, France’s jobless number reached yet another record in July.

Among the latest unemployed is France’s former economy minister Arnaud Montebourg whose dissent over the government’s austerity drive saw him pushed out.
