Protesters took to the streets of Buenos Aires Wednesday, railing against US-based hedge funds along with inflation and rising unemployment. The protest comes as Argentina's economy continues to tumble following a sovereign debt default on July 30. The workers began a 36-hour strike Wednesday, blocking throughfares and causing the closure of several government offices in the Argentine capital. They are demanding the government protect public-sector jobs.

Protesters came from groups including the Argentina Workers' Union (CTA). The default is partially a result of a breakdown of negotiations with US-based hedge funds, several of which are demanding full repayment on their Argentine debt. Many have refused to take a haircut on their bonds, a move which could have provided some breathing space for Buenos Aires. The Argentine economy is currently in recession with inflation running at roughly 40 percent.

Argentina last defaulted on its debt in 2002. In that default, dozens of people were killed in street protests and authorities froze financial accounts to prevent bank runs.
