Most dogs need human love and care to live a happy life. A dog in San Antonio named Diego that was found covered in motor oil is now getting aid and a second shot at being content.

He has received a foster home. Funds are still needed to ensure he gets the proper treatment, but thus far his future looks good.

On Friday, the 2-year-old Airedale terrier and Rottweiler mix was discovered tied to a pole in front of the Humane Society. Staffers took him into the facility and gave him baths to remove the motor oil.

Once it was gone, they noticed he had had sarcoptic mange, which happens when mites burrow under the skin and cause severe itching and irritation.

Employees at the Humane Society think Diego’s former owner tried to help him before the abandonment, as it’s a common misconception that burnt motor oil can treat mange.

In reality, motor oil is toxic to animals, just as bad as anti-freeze and rat poison. Efforts are underway to help Diego heal and he will be staying with a foster family during the recovery.

Once he receives a clean bill of health, Diego will be placed up for adoption. In the meantime, funds can be donated through Give Direct to help pay for his medication.
