The Oklahoma City Zoo is now home to a ridiculously adorable baby gorilla. The female Western lowland gorilla greeted the world in the early hours of August 16th.

The unnamed baby was born to mother Ndjole and father Togo. Unfortunately Ndjole didn’t pay much attention to the tiny gorilla.

The Oklahoma City Zoo veterinarian explained “Ndjole was given several opportunities to bond with her baby within the first 24 hours and didn’t show any interest in her, putting the newborn’s life at risk.”

Staffers immediately jumped in to raise her. Zoo employees will continue to supervise and feed her. Round-the-clock care will be given to the baby gorilla.

Keepers and the zoo vet will monitor her progress and work with the Gorilla Species Survival Plan to decide when she’ll be able to go with a surrogate mother or moved into a group setting.

Even though the baby has encountered setbacks in her young life, she is thriving. She reportedly weighs four pounds and is said to be strong and healthy.

Her birth is a small, but significant boost for her species as well. Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, due to a combination of habitat loss, disease and commercial hunting.
