Hamas says Israel tried to kill its military chief

A ten day ceasefire shattered, and Hamas says Israel has opened a "gateway to hell."

It accuses Israel of attempting to assassinate its military leader, Mohammed Deif with airstrikes soon after the ceasefire lifted. This flattened building is all that remains.

Deif was believed to be elsewhere at the time, but his wife and infant son were said to have been killed in the attack.

With the truce now over, the war rages on.

Gaza is under attack once again and in scenes that are now familiar, its hospitals are over-run with the injured.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMED ABU REYASH, RAFAH RESIDENT SAYING:

"We were sleeping at home with the children. There was a bombardment, without warning, and I was wounded, the entire family was wounded."

Israel's military says it has carried out more than 60 air strikes on the Gaza Strip since hostilities resumed. And they say Hamas has launched more than 80 rocket salvoes toward them.
