Nigeria has reported a new case of Ebola, bringing the number of suspected and confirmed cases in the country to 12, three of whom have died, the World Health Organization said.

The third person to die in the country was a staff member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Kevin De Cock described the outbreak in West Africa as one of “historical importance,” due to the large numbers of people affected.

“Ebola in Liberia is unquestionably a very grave crisis. It is uncontrolled, but it is controllable. I want to emphasise that, although the epidemic of the Ebola virus is uncontrolled in Liberia, it is controllable.

A consignment of experimental Ebola drugs arrived by plane in Liberia on Wednesday (August 13) to treat two doctors suffering from the virus, which has killed more than 1,000 people across four West African countries. The drug, ZMapp, arrived in two boxes on a commercial flight from the United States.

A German biopharma firm is helping in the fight against the deadly virus Ebola. Icon Genetics GmbH has provided pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. with specific know-how to create antibodies needed for the experimental drug known as ZMapp.

Scientists at the company, which consists of some 15 people and is based in the eastern German city of Halle, have created so-called vectors - DNA used to make plants create antibodies - which are put into bacteria and then transferred into tobacco plants, or nicotiana benthamiana.

During a week’s incubation period in a greenhouse, the plants produce antibodies for the Ebola virus. These antibodies are then extracted from the plant and the waste plant material is discarded.

The antibodies can then be used in the drug Zmapp.

The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that, since the outbreak was identified in March, there have been a total of 1,975 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of Ebola in West Africa. The death toll currently stands at 1,069 people.
