Dragonflies on river reeds and water lily flowers, at a pond eco-system in New Delhi's Wilderness Orchard.

Dragonflies which have been around since the time of Dinosaurs are found worldwide with more than 5,000 described species. They belong to the order of the Odonata. Dragonflies can be seen hunting and mating during the day. Some species of dragonfly are very protective of their territory from other male encroachments.

Dragonflies are characterized by large multifaceted eyes with two sets of strong transparent wings, and an extended body with a short lifespan of about a month.

Although dragonflies have six legs they are incapable of walking. However, they are excellent and strong fliers and can hover, fly both backwards and forward. They primarily feeds on mosquitoes, flies, bees, ants and wasp.
