Kendriya Vidyalaya is a system of central government schools under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Since inception in 1965, the Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools) have come to be known as centres of excellence in the field of secondary and senior secondary education promoting national integration and a sense of identity among the children. At the same time these school ensure the students total personality development and academic excellence.

Presently, there are 1086 schools known as Kendriya Vidyalayas, out of which 1083 are in India and three are located abroad. A total of 10,58,450 students and 49,286 employees are on rolls. These have been divided amongst 21 regions, each headed by an Assistant Commissioner.
