Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanti or sometimes merely as Janmashtami, is an annual commemoration of the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.
The festival is celebrated on the eigth day (Ashtami) day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadra (August-September) in the Hindu calendar. Rasa lila, dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna, are a special feature in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur. While the Rasa lila re-creates the flirtatious aspects of Krishna's youthful days, the Dahi Handi celebrate God's playful and mischievous side, where teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a high-hanging pot of butter and break it. This tradition, also known as uriadi, is a major event in Tamil Nadu on Gokulashtami.

Prem Mandir's architecture is based on the book "Shilp-Ratnakar", written by Vishwa Karma. The distinctively beautiful temple is made of white Italian marble. This marble is famous in the world for its utter whiteness and shine. The Mandir covers 54 acre land with the colorful fragrant gardens, exclusive fountains, and glimpses of pastimes of Shri Radha Krishna. The huge and high shiny white temple with beautiful kalash (Pitchers) on all the 94 artistically designed pillars and an ecstatically fluttering flag besides it Golden top, attracts the mind of tourists. The total height of this temple is 125 feet. It is now the greatest attraction of entire Braj.
Anyone can be stunned with the outer beauty with 80 panels on outside wall around the temple. The gardens and fountains of Prem Mandir enhance this outer view. It is first temple in the world, where many pastimes written in Bhagvat Maha Puran are illustrated on the wall.
The inside view of the temple drowns the spectator in sentiments of devotion. The huge idols of Shri Radha Krishna are situated in the center of ground floor. They look as if they will come alive! The inside walls are beautified with the engraved paintings of Shri Radha Krishna and glimpses of group Keertan and lectures of Shri Maharaj Ji. The beauty and art of tomb type roof cannot be described in words.
The first floor is glorified with the idols of Shri Sita Ram. Towards the south side of this floor the scenes of the pastimes of Gaurang Mahaprabhu are engraved with multi color stones and towards the north side the pictures of all the 4 previous Jagadgurus and great rasik saints like Jeev Goswami, Haridas Ji, Hit Harivansh Ji and Vallabhacharya Ji are engraved beautifully. Besides that the beautiful bhajans, rasia, and couplets are inscribed on the walls.
