Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) formerly Sahar International Airport, is the primary international airport in Mumbai, India, and is named after the 17th century Maratha Emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosle. The Airport's IATA code -- "BOM", is derived from Bombay, Mumbai's former name. The airport is the second busiest airport in India in terms of overall passenger traffic. The airport has five operating terminals spread over an operational area of 1,500 acres (610 ha) and is India's and South Asia's largest and most important airline hub; CSIA handled 30.74 million passengers and 656,369 tonnes of cargo during FY 2011-12. Along with Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, it handles more than half of the air traffic in South Asia.
The year 2006 witnessed a momentous change for the airports in India with the privatization of Mumbai's CSIA. On 3rd of May 2006, the consortium led by GVK was awarded the mandate to modernize and redevelop CSIA. Modernization and redevelopment of CSIA is a reflection of India's rapid growth. Being in the financial capital and a key gateway of the country, redevelopment of CSIA holds great significance in aiding the city to retain its fast paced growth. The transformation of CSIA, a brown-field project, is a one-of-its-kind unique infrastructural project in the world, unlike any other airport development projects. With a vision to become one of the world's best airports, MIAL has been continuously and consistently upgrading CSIA to an airport that delights its guests by offering best in class comfort and convenience. In order to achieve a global standard, MIAL has partnered with well-known international experts for airport design and operations. CSIA handled traffic of 29.1 million passengers and around 670,2 35 tonnes of cargo in the FY 2010-2011.
CSIA's visual identity has been an integral part of its modernization process. With the launch of CSIA's new face, it became the first Indian airport to receive a unique visual identity. Derived from a peacock feather, the acronym 'CSIA' has been woven seamlessly in the logo. The new identity symbolizes the three essential attributes: Pride in India, People of India and Global Standards. CSIA's Services and facilities include:
