The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, known as Harshad / Hashat Mata- the Goddess who spreads happiness.
According to the experts the temple structure dates back to 10th century. While many others believe it was built during the reign of Bhoja-the Gurjjar ruler of the 9nth century.
The massive temple with amazing architecture is now in ruins; and currently under the control of Archeological Survey of India (ASI).
The village of Abhaneri, in which the temple is situated, is also famous for Baoris or step wells. It's a the unique invention of the natives for harvesting rain water. It also provides drinking water to the area.
The architecture and size of the wells are bigger than life. Amongst the step wells, Chand Baori is the most popular one. This colossal step well is located in front of the Harshat Mata Temple. The huge tank with delicate carvings is certainly a delight to the eyes.
Abhaneri is a village 95 kilometers from Jaipur on the Agra-Jaipur road.
