Incense sticks are dried out in the sun after the mixture of the herbal ingredients are rolled onto the bamboo sticks to coat the stick evenly.

Sonam Tobden tends to his team at Lhawang Driden Incense as they prepare Drizang Kuenchap dhoop in Wangdue Phodrang district of Bhutan.

The incense here has been manufactured under the strict Buddhist traditional method and in the most hygienic environment, in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Bhutan, known as 'Menjong" meaning the valley of medicines in the Buddhist world is situated in the eastern Himalaya. The country is rich in "herbal medicines." The incense which is manufactured strictly according to Buddhist tradition requires over 30 different rare herbal species.

The burning of this aromatic incense not only pleases the deities, but also has a soothing effect on human beings. The lingering aroma of incense makes monasteries, homes, offices, and other sacred places smell like the abode of Gods.

Hand-made incense making in Bhutan is a tradition that has been following since ages and it is a spiritual activity that is done carefully by mixing the pure natural ingredients like herbs. It is a part of Bhutanese craft and culture moreover its creates employment for uneducated poor people. Incense sticks are used by many communities in the world daily to make offerings to God.
