East Bay SPCA staffers suspect movie fans are going to purchase pet turtles and tortoises without realizing the hard work caring for them takes.

Local SPCA President Allison Lindquist remarked “Owning a pet takes planning, equipment, food and commitment. Sadly, many people do little research before acquiring a pet and don't understand and commit to the responsibilities of lifetime ownership.”
Anyone who is looking to obtain a pet reptile needs to understand the creatures require specific supplements, food and a special habitat to survive.

Owners need to purchase new equipment every time the reptile grows out of a space. In some cases a turtle or tortoise can outlive its owner.

Public members have also been advised that some reptiles are sold with health problems.
