For your dream home's location, you probably wouldn't pick a large volcanic crater with an active volcano inside it - however beautiful the tropical paradise may be. Yet about 200 people live on this remote island classified as an active Class-C volcano, and tourists are welcome if they can get there.

Japan's Aogashima island is 222 miles south of Tokyo in the Philippine Sea. Visitors take a plane or boat from Tokyo to Hachijojima island. From there, a helicopter or boat travels about 37 miles to Aogashima.

While summers do have pleasant winds, the area is known for tidal waves, turbulent sea crossings, and dense fog. The helicopter and ferry often get cancelled.

The whole island is a walkable 3.5 square miles. Navigation’s a breeze with only one circular road and a few offshoots. Lodging runs around $40 to $90 per night, but if registered with the village office, you can use the free camp site.

In the 1780s, the volcano’s last eruption killed half the residents and forced others to flee. However, within 50 years, many returned.
