It's now home to hundreds of Yazidis now in fear of their life.

As the militant group the Islamic State gains more ground in Iraq's North, the Yazadis are a target -- considered "devil worshipers" by the militant group that is leaving a legacy of terror and death.

The news from home is grim.

(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) DISPLACED IRAQI YAZIDI, ABU SHAKER, SAYING:

"I received a call an hour ago from a relative there. They are walking away and leaving the dead children behind."

They have carried what little they can from home.

It's a scene playing out in other parts of the north, where survival itself is a kind of victory.

The U.N. says as many as 25,000 children are now homeless.

Against this backdrop Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki clinging to power, warns against any attempt to form a new government.
