Hamas accepts 24-hour Gaza humanitarian truce

Fighting has resumed between Israel and Hamas Islamist militants after a temporary ceasefire in the 20-day conflict.

Now Hamas says it is agreeing to a 24-hour humanitarian truce in Gaza.

Earlier in the day, Israel called off its own 24-hour truce after Hamas launched rockets at them.

This was the Hamas spokesman on Sunday:

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) HAMAS SPOKESMAN, SAMI ABU ZUHRI, SAYING:

"In response to the assessment of the United Nations and taking into consideration the condition of our people in Gaza, especially in light of the coming of the Eid holiday, there were discussions between the factions and they have reached an agreement to accept the offer of a 24-hour humanitarian calm, starting from two o'clock on Sunday."

But as 2pm came and went, both sides were reportedly exchanging fire.

An Israeli official said the truce was being reviewed.
