The Rütli meadow – a place of pilgrimage for the Swiss - has been kept more or less as it was in 1291, when history was made here.
This is where representatives from the valley communities of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden met to pledge their loyalty to each other, at a time when the area was governed by the Habsburgs. Every year on August 1 it’s the scene of national day celebrations. (Julie Hunt, swissinfo.ch/SRF)
