TEEN SLAMMED FOR TAKING SMILING SELFIE AT AUSCHWITZ
Breanna Mitchell probably wasn’t expecting her selfie to go viral … but that’s exactly what happened after the American teen posted this pic online – smiling away on a visit to the former concentration camp, Auschwitz, in Poland. The photo has been met with widespread condemnation online.
Many have taken to the web, slamming what they describe as inappropriate behavior. These Twitter users for example remind the teen that millions of people died in this camp and there is nothing amusing about that. Some posts are pretty hostile, with photomontages of Breanna Mitchell`s now famous selfie ; we see her grinning alongside Adolf Hitler for example or in front of the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks.
In view of the scale of the backlash, Breanna`s mother has also taken to the web to defend her daughter. She has posted a series of tweets explaining the context in which the photo was taken. She says that Breanna had studied the Holocaust with her father; that they had planned this trip together and their daughter took this photo for him, in his memory, as he had died a year ago to that day.
This is not the first time this type of controversial selfie has sparked such level of debate.
