An air strike on a rebel-held border town in eastern Ukraine has triggered a blame game between Kyiv and Moscow.

The strike on Snizhne in Donetsk region destroyed several homes leaving 11 people dead.

As Ukraine claimed Russian involvement, separatist rebels said the rockets were fired by Ukraine’s air force.

Either way it was local residents who bore the brunt of the attack:

One distraught survivor of the attack described what happened after the explosion:

“I immediately started to run and saw a man from my building, they are a young couple, who just bought a flat here. He screamed: ‘My child was there!’ There was so much smoke everywhere! And when smoke disappeared I ran there and saw my husband standing on the ruins only in his underwear.”

In other fighting Ukrainian government forces have reported the loss of eight soldiers in grenade attacks by pro-Russian fighters in the same region.

Although Russia denies involvement in the three month conflict EU leaders accuse Moscow of exacerbating the tensions and are set to extend sanctions at Wednesday’s summit in Brussels.
