A man from California reeled in a shockingly massive fish. 76-year-old Jack McGuire spent 40 minutes struggling to pull the 482-pound halibut onboard the boat.
Think of the largest halibut you have ever seen.
Just don't compare it with Jack McGuire's catch. The 76-year-old from California spent 40 minutes struggling to pull a massive halibut onboard the boat.
At the time of the catch, McGuire had been on a weeklong fishing trip near Glacier Bay, Alaska. As he attempted to reel in the fish, the captain of the vessel, Rye Phillips shouted, which proved to McGuire that he got a big one.
McGuire commented “All of a sudden Phillips said, ‘Oh my god. This is a monster.’ And this is a captain who has seen a lot of fish.”
The 482-pound fish measured 95 inches in length. McGuire’s catch technically beat the current world record holding 459-pound Pacific halibut which was caught off of Alaska’s coast in the mid 1990s.
Unfortunately for McGuire, his halibut doesn’t meet the standards set by the International Game Fish Association because the fish was shot and harpooned before being pulled onto the boat. Rye had to shoot the halibut, as he feared it would flop around and hurt someone.
