North Koreans on Tuesday marked the 20th anniversary of death of their founding leader Kim Il Sung by laying flowers on Mansu Hill in central Pyongyang.

Thousands turned out in a show of loyalty to the country’s ruling dynasty and bowed in front of giant statues of Kim Il Sun and his son and successor Kim Jong Il.

Kim Il Sung is still officially revered in North Korea as the country’s founding leader. The giant statue of Kim Il Sung was put up during his lifetime, but the giant statue of Kim Jong Il which now stands next to it was only added after Kim Jong Il’s death in 2011.

North Koreans are expected to pay their respects at statues and portraits on all major anniversaries and holidays.
