Opposition leader, Khursheed Shah, put forth suggestions for electoral reforms in Nation Assembly on Tuesday. He stated that the condition of being a judge to be eligible for the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) should be abolished. “Due to the obligation of being a judge, the choices for the selection of CEC have squeezed,” he said. “How to find a Chief Election Commissioner if there’s no eligible judge?”
In an informal briefing to the media outside the parliament house, Syed Khursheed Shah, said Chief Election Commissioner should be empowered, adding that CEC’s role is similar to that of a member until now. One has to be a judge to be entitled for the post; this condition has limited our choice for the position, he added.
Shah suggested an amendment is required in order to expand the eligibility criteria for the CEC’s post that could make bureaucrats and lawyers qualify for the post. He further proposed the tenure of the government to be of four years.
