Atmosphere "Jazz Rock" 1981 Louxembourg Jazz Funk
Formed in the capital of Luxembourg at the end of the 70's, this group features one of the most significant jazz-related figures of the country, trumpetist Gast Waltzing. The line-up consisted also of bassist Heng Kleren, drummer Al Lenners, keyboardist Rene Nuss and sax player Guy Schadeck.Surprisingly their debut ''Jazz Rock'' came out in 1980 on the Pavane label, known for specializing in contemporary Classical Music.
The title is more than succesful, easy to remember and fully representitive of Atmosphere's sound, which was typical of the Euro Jazz/Fusion movement, featuring airy and pleasant Jazz Rock with solid playing and balanced individual masturbations.Quite similar to NUCLEUS and PASSPORT, ''Jazz Rock'' features plenty of wind instruments attacks with both breezy solos and more powerful interventions, split in melodic and dramatic passages. The album is also highlighted by the good work of Nuss on electric and acoustic piano with some impressive lines along the way.Atmosphere present structures with little in common with the free sense of Jazz, instead the music is cohesive and well-crafted, of course always supported by some more abstract jams. However there is some nice diversity along the pieces with ''De Nice'' having a long piano/flute introduction, while proggy vibes can also be detected throughout the listening. Moreover the band shows a nice ability in changing tempos, from fast rhythmic tones to more laid-back, atmospheric soundscapes.
In 1982 Gast Waltzing became professor of trumpet at the Luxembourg Conservatory and in 1986 he founded the school's Jazz Department, being its leader for the upcoming years.Guy Schadeck had also a respectable career with numerous important collaborations, mainly at a concert level.
Very good Jazz/Fusion with great breaks around and a rich sound, headed by keyboards, piano and wind instruments.Pleasant and satisfying music, an excellent album for all lovers of Jazz Rock and Fusion, while progheads are also recommended to keep an eye on it.
