I hope you enjoy the Fourth of July with a medley of Military Band music that was popular in 1913, played in the Turkey Trot Style. The medley consists of 1) Waitin' for the Robert E Lee 2) Here Comes My Daddy Now 3) Hitchey Koo and 4) Take Me to That Sewanee Shore with a finale refrain of the first piece. The medley was recorded by the Victor Military Band under the direction of Edward T King at the Victor Talking Machine Studios in Camden, New Jersey January 27, 1913. Take 2 was released as Victor 35277 and Gramophone 0414 on a 12 inch red label double sided disc.
This vid commemorates the most famous race of all time. In 1872, the Natchez raced the Robert E. Lee from New Orleans to St. Louis. The Lee won by over 6 1/2 hours arriving in St. Louis July 4, 1872. The Lee's Captain had won by taking on the treacherous shallow Mississippi in the thick peasoup fog late at night as depths were tested by fathom lines every few feet. The Natchez was the fastest boat but its' captain tied up on the bank in the fog unaware of the Lee's do or die strategy. Papers as far away as London, Paris, and Berlin carried every detail of the 3 1/2 day race. Betting on the race became so frenzied that women, babes in arms, lined the banks at Natchez, Memphis, and Cairo as even they had bet their clothes, food, animals, and sometimes, homes on the outcome. Fortunes were won and lost that July 4 so many years ago. Thanks again to Mike W. for lending me this amazing 101 year old 78 from the Gustav Groos collection to transcribe and upload to DM and YT.
